Steel wheels and rims

Rims are the basic elements of car wheels. Those made of steel are chosen by drivers primarily for economic reasons. Steel variants mostly look very similar, this is due to the low plasticity of steel. This property does not allow wheel makers to be too creative as in the case of alternative alloy wheels. A wheel is made up of two basic elements - a disc and a rim. In the case of steel models, both the disc and the rim are individually stamped from two pieces of metal and then calibrated and welded together.

What are the characteristics of steel wheels?

Steel wheels are primarily characterised by their favourable price and durability. A set of original wheels of this type can be even several times cheaper in comparison to a set of alloy wheels. The regeneration of damaged steel wheels is associated with lower costs for the driver. The advantage of this variant is also greater resistance to static and dynamic loads. Steel wheels will work well in winter, due to the fact that they are resistant to road salt.

Steel wheels and rims - basic parameters

When selecting steel wheels, special attention should be paid to a few important parameters, which will allow the model to fit perfectly to our car. The diameter and width are provided in inches, where 1 inch = 2.54 cm. The bolt spacing is also important, as each car has its own specific spacing. An offset (ET, offset) is another important parameter to pay attention to. It determines the distance between the mounting plane of the rim and its vertical centre of symmetry. This distance may be either negative, positive or zero when the mounting plane is exactly on the vertical axis of symmetry. The centering opening, on the other hand, enables the rim to be precisely centred on the car hub. Its diameter is provided in millimetres.
