Looking for a reliable winter tyre? The Nokian WR D4 is the successor to the WR D3, a popular tyre amongst Central European and Scandinavian drivers. The new model is a solution designed for city cars, estates and small cars.

Nokian Tyres prioritises safety and excellent performance in typical winter conditions, so it is not surprising that it has been awarded the "A" rating for braking on wet surfaces (within the European labelling system). The WR D4 is the first tyre in its category with an "A" rating for wet braking.

The model features a directional tread pattern, which has been improved and optimised to suit winter conditions in Central Europe. The improved block design, reinforced with special connections and incisions, improves effective dispersal of water, slush and snow.

zebro-centralne-w-biezniku-kierunkowym-opony-nokian-wr-d4

The wide central rib features shorter blades to ensure steering precision and stability on the road. All of the grooves and tread blocks have been individually designed. This guarantees excellent grip and stability when going round corners and during sudden manoeuvres.

The tyre features the Nokian Twin Trac Silica compound, containing natural rubber, silica and rapeseed oil. This compound improves driveability on snowy and wet surfaces, helps increase grip and is very durable, which in turn has a positive impact on the service life of the WR D4. The use of this compound reduces rolling resistance, which in turn leads to a reduction in fuel consumption and thus a more economic and environmentally friendly driving experience.

The engineers behind the tyre have also improved acoustic comfort using Silent Sidewall technology, a special strip made from an innovative rubber compound and inserted between the side wall and the tread (shown above). This actively filters noise and vibrations coming from the tyre whilst driving, resulting in a quiet and comfortable driving experience.

Nokian Tyres is an independent Finnish manufacturer which is particularly renowned for its winter tyres adapted to the difficult conditions of Central Europe and Scandinavia. Nokian Tyres introduces environmentally friendly solutions, making its products good for the environment not only at the production stage but also during their use and disposal.

    Opinion from outside the UK

When I decided to buy the Ford Focus 2013 model winter tyre, I did a lot of research on the internet and the market. This research lasted nearly 4 months. I have studied many tyre models of many brands. I made a lot of sales and price comparison on the market. I decided to set a few tyres in my head and decide to buy the tyres of the Nokian company, which specialises in winter tyres. I have done a lot of research on the market and internet sites to get Nokian. The Oponeo site appeared to be more detailed than many sites and was more affordable than the others. I told the Customer Representatives I would buy a winter tyre. And I met with a really helpful feedback. After placing order with Oponeo, I made a phone interview with the customer support and they sent me the tyre in very short time. I am really pleased to be shopping at Oponeo. The Nokian WR D4 tyres performed better than I expected. It makes you feel safe in snowy weather, and rainy weather. I have traveled at long road at quite high speeds, thanks to my tyres on the roads where many cars travel at a low speed when I find the opportunity to use their tyres more on the long way, and I enjoy driving very much while driving my car. Although the Nokian WR D4 tyres are winter tyres, they seem to be at the noise level of the summer tyres and sometimes even less noisy. It was snowy, rainy and dry, but it performed very well in the winter months. Of course you should not expect wonders from any tyres, but it is a really great tyre compared to other brands. The only pity is that maybe the tyres are a bit soft, and if you go into the potholes very carelessly you will get a distorted structure of the tyre (that's not brand specific - they all do that). It's a tyre that you'll be very pleased to use. I felt a bit more fuel consumption due to the fact that it is a winter tyre in terms of fuel saving but winter tyres do not want to increase the fuel consumption and it is ideal to consider Nokian WR D4 tyres as winter tyres. I am delighted to have taken the Nokian winter tyre, the brand of a cold country like Finland and the winter tyre's signature, and the tyres from Oponeo's site. I encourage everyone to buy the Nokian WR D4 winter tyre and from Oponeo. I would definitely recommend them to buy from Oponeo, especially those who will take the tyres. Whichever tyre you buy, you will be satisfied with the service that Oponeo offers customer care as much as possible and the customer representatives' interest and service is very worth mentioning. I've mounted the Nokian WR D4 tyres over 2 months ago. I drove a little more than 750 miles on them with a 150 bhp car weighing 1.5 tons. Usually in the city. First thing that got my attention was the smell of rubber compound. That's very unusual. From what I've read Nokian added canola oil to the mixture, maybe this caused such an unusual effect. These tires really smell like no other. I don't pay much attention to the appearance of the tread, for me it's completely irrelevant. For me, the tyre needs to be effective when it comes to draining water, mud and snow as well as breaking distance. On second place i'd put the noise level and the third thing is rolling resistance. But I must admit that this tread is unique in appearance and looks quite nice. As for traction; On the dry the tyre firmly grips the road and is very quiet, not squealing on curves. At high speeds on the highway tyre noise did not bother me at all, it is minimal and for that Nokian is to be commended. I had the opportunity to ride in the city during really heavy rains which turned roads into rivers and so I am delighted how well this tire can cope with the water. At 45mph in such conditions, I only heard sough of traversed water, and the car felt like it was sticked with a glue. Rut with water? For those tires it does not matter. Braking? At the 45 mph, in these rainy conditions, the car felt like if it was driving on the dry road. As for the winter conditions of snow it was maybe a couple of days and the tires were good. On the slush also all great. But it is not enough to somehow verify their effectiveness and to issue reliable opinions. As for the rolling resistance is not noted a higher combustion When you change summer tires (Pirelli) with these winter tires, but i refrain from evaluation because of a small run on these Nokian WR D4. I won't judge thei durability neither because of distance. In my opinion premium tires all have similar parameters. If you have a slow 300-400 pounds and wish to buy winter tires then i honestly recommend them. If not, try Barums, but in my opinion it is worth investing in Nokians, in the end is the only part of the car which directly connects it to the surface ... Final statement - since i usually have little time to get to work in the morning i'm very glad Nokian WR D4 can take me there swiftly and safely. Read more Collapse

The Nokian WR D4 keeps cool as well fitted on the car with more than 300 hp. First impression - at above + 10 ° C during braking from high speeds the tyre terribly bends (i know it should be used when it's colder but still) - enough so that you think that you are driving on the rims. They also make strange sound during braking (something like this specifically hums and whistles, oddly enough from the beginning I thought that I did keep coming brakes) Second thing is that Nokian WR D4 are rather durable. A few days driving in dodatnch temperature, some faster braked suddenly have 10 thousand miles instead of 8 mm tread close to 7 mm. Any super-aggressive driving, most highway and is classified as the biggest downsides of the tire. On the plus side? Adhesives for dry better than a summer tire type Dunlop Sport Max On wet at all a revelation because I virtually can ride as if there was no water on the road. Overally: you should buy them even if you hadn't heard of them before, but if You are driving on a lot I'm sure the will last a few seasons so it's hard not to recommend them. Read more Collapse

I bought Nokian WR D4 to replace Pirelli Winter Snowcontrol 185/60 R15, and during summer i use of Michelin Energy Saver in the same size. I decided to buy Nokian in "XL" version with a load index 88 instead of 84 to get more support and I do not regret the choice at all. This new Nokian rubber proved to be a very good decision. In terms of grip on dry, wet and snow, all compared to the old Pirelli, Michelin is compared to the summer, with respect to which these Nokian also offer lower fuel consumption and noise levels slightly lower, despite the winter geometry and the greater load index. My car now offers great comfort with the soft suspension, but it gives great opportunity for sports maneuvering, as the tread a little 'tight; nevertheless, I found more grip than the Michelin summer, which amazed me. Throughout the winter, in which I have traveled about 10,000 miles, the tread has worn by ONE millimeter. Ultimately, I could not claim to be more happy with this purchase. Last, but not least, the Oponeo service was good and fast. Read more Collapse

Hello, there were many positive reviews I have to express my opinion on Nokian WR D4 tires. Traction and breaking on snow as well as wet is pretty good but i was hoping it'd be a bit better. The noise a little quieter than my Michelins primacy Hp. And that would be enough. Now a negative impression. The tire is the index of H, but goes on it above 140km / h (weather conditions good and dry road), unfortunately the car gets unstable sometimes but probably because it's quite heavy and even Michelins felt that way. Otherwise the traction is satisfactory . I've never experienced anything like this for the summer, so on dry pavement advise against. To 140km / h the tire meets your expectatnions but above that Nokian WR D4 werent so good during July / September 2015 (but still that was the time when summer tyres should've been used so i got those fitted little too early. It is true that I do not have Nokian WR D4 for long, but I managed to do 1500 miles already. I tested it both out and in the city, because I traveled a lot lately. On a dry surface they behave really well. For wet (and a lot of rain recently) I was very pleasantly surprised, because I did not feel much of a difference. But most surprised me is how the tires allow you to correct mistakes on the slippery surface whether it's snow or soft ice. I have repeatedly made the mistake of giving too much gas while cornering (at this point it's probably just the spikes would have helped), the car began to fly, but after rapid correction of gas and counterattacks on wheels - Nokian WR D4 immediately caught traction again. Really highly recommended Nokian - I will recommend them to my faily and friends. Read more Collapse

I've used Nokian WR-G2 for a few years now and was sceptical about the new WR-D4 tyres. They're actually better than the WR-G2 in all respects other than one - the WR-D4 is directional and therefore has to be installed to run with the correct rotation direction, whereas the WR-G2 could be used on any wheel. This means that the D4 can't be rotated as easily for even tyre wear as it is limited to one side of the vehicle. Overall though, I'm very happy with this tyre and it sticks like nobodies business. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Nokian tyres for winter driving, and with the performance of the D4 then it does seem to be an improvement. I'll be giving them a try on the rear wheel drive car next winter when the G2s are worn out and hope they'll be as good as they are on a front wheel drive car. Read more Collapse

I chose Nokian WR D4 that cause i wanted them to be as quiet as possible. Nokians were suggested to me by Oponeo consultant on the phone but i also contemplated Fuldas`. Choosing a good rubber are only slightly louder than the summer (Fulda, below 70dB by. Label), basically hear them after exceeding 110km / h. I do not know how they behave in the snow and mud, because I changed at the beginning of November and the snow still was not there. Nokian WR D4 have protective rubber belt in order to protect the rim. I wanted this because due to the large brake discs have to go on 17 'rims. Sometimes while parking your car i seriously needed to have this fringe protector. In summer tires without rims element it is less exposed to the curb when parking. Read more Collapse

The tire is the only element of the vehicle that comes in contact with the road. The ratio of the small surface of the tire with the road affects our security in any trip, whether it be in the city at low speeds, or on the road on the highway. The city counts response time and route to ensure that the contact between the tire and the surface there. Nokian WR D4 provide me with these two things at the highest level. I have no fear that i'd decelerate to slowly before driving thru the crosswalk and I'm sure that the route traversed in arc suddenly will not straighten. Great handling on any surface. In the rain Nokian WR D4 are draining gallons of water providing excellent traction. On the snow they cope with the road like no other. Read more Collapse

Nokian tyres given me a wonderful driving experience, but Nokian WR D4 exceeded all my expectations. I drive a lot in the city, but also outside of it. Tire surprised me with incredible comfort level, very quiet, but above all, they behave very well! Car performed sensationally as is glued to the surface. I have a sense of security and comfort on thee wet. This is the first tire that does not skid on the wet that i have had. When it comes to winter conditions ... Well, next month I'm going to Norway, and with this in mind i've analyzed the purchase of the right tires for extreme harsh conditions. I hope that the selection will prove accurate. The behavior in winter conditions - I gave 1 (to be assessed in the future). Read more Collapse

I drove in the for a total of over one million kilometers already ripped off a lot of tires. I can say that Nokian WR D4 are superb in case of quality, handling and traction. Previously i rode on Debica Frigo which were pretty good but rather average on the dry and in the corners. Pirelli very feeble, Goodyear Ultra Grip 7 very good, Fulda Krisalp average quickly run out, the Bridgestone Blizzak greatest failure is the worst tire I've had . with Nokian WR D4 wet is sensational 6+ marvel at dry as the summer, the snow dry as the water 6, wet snow and slush 5-, braking and drivability on the snow 5+. Perhaps there is a better, but I will not be looking further, in winter i will only be choosing NOKIAN from now on. Read more Collapse

I have traveled too short a distance to give a fully honest opinion, but now I am able to evaluate the tyres very positively. The tyres have a low noise level which is a big plus for winter cars. The car burns less fuel and certainly not more than a summer tyre. We do not feel any discomfort in the wet. Perfectly suppresses noise on uneven surfaces. Winter is just ahead of us but I managed to drive over the snow and slush and I noticed that the car doesn't slip and in principle it's hard to do so even when trying to intentionally. Uphill on the snow it goes firmly and well. This is the first winter light from which I am fully satisfied, it is worth the price I recommend with a clear conscience Nokian WR D4 tyre Read more Collapse

Very good grip on dry surfaces. In the corners, the tyres keep the car perfectly. There is no slip during rapid acceleration. With heavy rain and a layer of water on the surface, the tyres turned a little. Especially during stronger depression it was felt that the car was floating. I enter calmly in the corners in wet conditions, in the end my car is an estate and it is used to transport children. The tyres are quiet and comfortable. I judge tyres after driving about 3 thousand km, so far I have not had the pleasure of driving a car through snow and ice. I marked 4 points when driving on snow, because I had to mark something. In this assessment, I would like to remain neutral. Read more Collapse

I have driven about 2 thousand on tires. km. On both dry and wet surfaces I have very good grip, I even get the feeling that it's better than summer tires (Bridgestone on 19 "rims.) As for the winter conditions, I can not say anything yet, but I'm disappointed with the loudness / noiseiness of the tires, definitely louder than the Continental TS 830 P which I have in another car (profile the same) and louder than the summer despite the summer profile 275 and the Nokian has 245. Good price in relation to quality, though looking back I think it's a little better to buy Conti, mainly due to the acoustic comfort, when it comes to the other parameters I do not feel the difference. Comparing these tyres to WR G2 and WR D3, unfortunately I have not seen any drastic changes. While WR G2 knocked me down with firm snow grip, D3 only maintained its level, just like D4. The fact that keeping track on the water-filled road is sensational, but the comfort of driving on dry leaves much to be desired. Firstly, the tyres roar in the 80-100 speed range, secondly, the balance gets blown up and you have to rebalance them ... I understand that this is a new series and new tyres, but they could do better. In general, it is very good, but you can have high requirements for this price. Compared to the competition - I would choose the same again. Read more Collapse

I covered about 2000 km to date, including the highway. The first thing that surprised me was the quietness and smoothness i had during first trip of nearly 400 km on the highway. I expected to feel more vibrations of the steering wheel and interior noise at 130 km / h the car, was in fact only slightly noisier than previous summer tyres Dunlop. I have not even got to test the tyres of heavy rain or snow, but based on reviews read I should not worry about this aspect. My only doubt was right on the theoretically most unfavorable situations to winter tyres as the dry asphalt and high speed, but the tyres convinced me there's no need to worry. Read more Collapse

These are my next Nokian tyres. Previously for 6 years I had asymmetrical now I decided to go on directional ones. These are the quietest winter tyres I have ever used. I have been using them since the beginning of December and at the beginning it was too difficult to assess because there were no winter conditions. Now, from frost and snow, I can say and definitely commend them. They perform very well on slippery surfaces, there is no problem with starting or ice or snow. Braking - No problem - evenly and firmly. I definitely recommend these tyres really worth it for Winter there is nothing better :) on them I drive like in the summer. Read more Collapse

Nokian WR D4 were bought 10 days ago and took them about 500 miles, so really still am experiencing them. At first I was fascinated by road feedback and traction. I like it more and more. To date, 20/10/2015 there was no opportunity to test the snow. The tyres are also good when it comes to comfort - no noise even when compared to the good summer tires (Vredestein Sportrac 5). Grat dampening of road inequalities. The tire seems to be stiff some of the time and soft the other part. Just at the right time when you need it so Nokian really thought that one out. If you can edit the reviews i will add more in the future. Read more Collapse

A brilliant tire, holds practically in all conditions. The best purchase when it comes to winter tires. I also traveled on Conti and, according to me, Nokian wins. There was a moment of fear when the car driving parallel to me did not stop before another who let the pedestrian in, hit the car in front of him. Before my eyes I had already hit the one in front of me, but despite the slippery surface and hard pressed ABS, he stopped only once and braked without any problem. Tires are safety, there is nothing to save on them, and in my opinion this model is excellent value for money. I bought them at the beginning of September. Read more Collapse

On the wet and dry asphalt revelation. Keeps the surface glued. I have not yet had the chance to test it on snow / slush, but to my conditions 50/50 city / route is the perfect tire. Quieter than ... my summer tires (I did not pay attention to it once, but the comfort of driving on the road is now poetry), the combustion did not increase at all. Interesting how durability, but it will come out after the season - nice bajer is in the form of a tread measure already scaled on the tire. I am also 100% satisfied with my choice and I am more than convinced that I bought the best winter tire I could buy in my size 185/65 R15. Read more Collapse

I can recommend Nokian winter tires with a clear conscience. These are my first tires of this company, but certainly not the last. I chose them because a lot of people recommended their safety and I wanted a proven product and high quality. Ideally suited to driving around the city and beyond. I did not have any emergency situation in which they would not be able to cope. Exactly as in the manufacturer's descriptions the tire, due to the large number of grooves, carries away slush, water. High ride comfort, quiet tire operation. The car was light and easy to drive. Very good quality at a reasonable price. Read more Collapse

The tires work great in all conditions. On summer tires, when braking strongly, he turned on ABS twice. On Nokians in winter conditions (snowstorm at night, thaw, frost -15) I did not have such a situation. Excellent road holding, sensational water evacuation, trouble-free braking. I recommend to everyone - it is worth to drive with a sense of security and full control over the car in all conditions. An additional advantage - also important to me - is very quiet for winter tires. Simply great. I am glad that finally a real winter and I could immediately check the new purchase and fully enjoy it. I bought these tires as my first of this company. I decided to buy after a long reading many tests and opinions of other users. I was also recommended by the Volvo showroom - it was the scarves that prevailed. The tires look good, they are not loud at low speed or pow. 100km / h. On dry I do not have any comments as to the behavior for it in the wet are great! They stick like glued. I live in the Beskids and the morning weather (low temperature, wet surface) often caused trouble even for Pirelli tires (summer). D4 simply sweeps away. I wonder how they will behave in bigger snow and ice :) Read more Collapse

I rode my first season on Nokian tyres. The winter that everyone saw was, it was cold but the snow was short, and when it was already a tyre, it worked out sensational. 18/01/2018 fresh snow, the city paralyzed, most of the drivers slides on their "winter tyres" and Nokian went through swiftly. No problem with maintaining the track, no problem uphill. There is no problem with slush on the motorway. On a dry surface, the tyre does not make noise, it is simply silent. Has the tyre saved fuel consumption? It's hard to say. First of all, it did not cause its increase, and it's great. Read more Collapse

At the beginning I will write that I have not had the opportunity to test tyres on snow and slush. I suspect that the tyres will work well in the snow. I had a lot of winter tyres to choose from. I read a lot of opinions and, as usual, I looked for these more well-known brands. Luckily I decided on Nokian WR D4. The tyres are perfectly balanced, they move swiftly. On wet without turning on the traction at 300 hp power really shot like a sling. Thanks oponeo I have tyres from this country that produce them, not Russian production because they happen to be as I know. Read more Collapse

So far I have used these tyres in excessively wet conditions and off read and they have not disappointed the vehicle feels lighter and more nimble in comparison to the summer Goodyear efficient grip tyres I normally drive, but I suspect them being runflats makes this difference. I am eagerly awaiting the snow and ice to see how well these tyres preform as I have a feeling that they will do well with their chunky grip and plenty of sipes that is why I have not rated them for snow and ice yet. Extremely quiet tire - for the first time I have a winter tire much quieter on a dry surface than a summer tire. Virtually noiseless. Off-route fuel consumption has dropped noticeably, and the city is even better (almost a liter less per 100 km). On wet, frosted and slightly snow-covered, the Nokian WR D4 is simply sensational. On dry slightly worse - ASR reacts and limits sharp start. Read more Collapse

I've found these tyres to be good all yr round, as long as your driving style is not too sporty, as that would surely alter the amount of wear. I've found them to give good grip on wet and icey roads'I have pushed on certain occasions, going into tight bends too fast, but they still didn't let go, so very pleased overall, and would certainly probably buy them again.
