The History Of Citroen
The earliest roots of this company date back to 1904, when André Citroën established the Engrenages Citroën company for the purpose of manufacturing gear wheels. Soon, the gear-wheel transmissions produced by this firm were installed in most French cars, as well as Rolls-Royce vehicles.Citroen itself did not produce its first car until 1919, when it began manufacturing the Citroen Type A. This vehicle debuted with a mass advertising campaign and over 16,000 orders were placed in just two weeks - a tremendous success for the time. The company experienced some of its most rapid development in the 1940s and 1950s. In 1949, it started producing the 2CV (the popular “duck”) with a two-cylinder engine. This was produced until 1990.
In 1955, the DS model was represented at the Paris fair. This was met with great positivity, with 12,000 orders received on the first day alone. In 1970, Citroen produced around 103,000 DS cars and, by this point, they had almost produced 1.5 million DS cars over all.In 1974, Citroen formed the PSA group with Peugeot and the companies have shared various elements, such as engines, transmission systems and floorpans. At the beginning of the new century, the C5 model was launched, which turned out to be controversial due to the vehicle’s conservative appearance. Fortunately, Citroen won drivers over with the more shapely C3 model and the company soon rounded out the range with the C8, C2, C1, C4 and C6. Alongside passenger cars, Citroen also produces light commercial vehicles.
Accolades
Over the years, Citroen has made numerous contributions to the automotive industry. It has introduced numerous new technologies, such as steel bodies, hydropneumatic suspension systems and the serial assembly line.Likewise, its 1955 DS model was also very innovative, complete with disc brakes, a semi-automatic transmission and a big, 500-litre trunk. These were all cutting edge solutions at the time.
