History of Honda

The company’s history started in the 1920s. Soichiro Honda left his family home and started an apprenticeship at an automobile repair shop.
In 1947, Soichiro produced a bicycle powered by an internal combustion engine. This lead him to establish the Honda Motor Company in 1948 and, in 1963, it released its first S360 and S500 car models at the Tokyo motor show. The Honda N360 was the first car to be produced on a large scale. At the end of 1967, it featured a 70 horsepower engine.

In 1972, the firm created the highly successful Honda Civic vehicle and, in 1978, the sporting Honda Prelude. It should be noted that, throughout this time, Honda was not restricted to Japan: initially, it mostly sold cars in the USA.Since 1986, Honda has all been manufacturing luxurious Acura cars. These are only sold in North America and Hong Kong. In 2008, the organisation employed more than 180,000 people and generated revenue in excess of 5 billion dollars (from 2006 data). Apart from vehicles, the company continues to perfect its range of motorcycles, but it also sells scooters, engines, robots and aeroplanes.

Currently, Honda is the largest engine manufacturer in the world. It manufactures over 25 million cars a year. A lot of the company’s engines use Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC). Four versions of this system are currently being produced, with the DOHC VTEC engine being the most technologically advanced. This solution first appeared in the legendary B16A, with 16 valves, 160 HP and 1595cc. This engine was first fitted to Japanese versions of the Honda Integra XSi and RSi. In 1991, it was used in Europe for the Honda Civic i-VT, where the B16A1 reached 150 HP at 7,600 RPM.Honda also actively involves itself in motorsports. It participates in the Moto GP, as well as supplying engines for Formula 1.

Accolades

Honda is famous for many innovates, but it is arguably one of the biggest car brands known for using alternative fuels. The Honda Civic GX is one of the first vehicles fuelled with compressed natural gas.Towards the end of 1999, the company launched the first commercial hybrid-electric-petrol motor, which it used on the Insight model. The fuel consumption was 3.4 litres per 100 kilometres, as tested on the motorway

In 2002, Honda launched a hybrid Civic model, using hydrogen fuel cells. Due to this energy source, the car does not produce any pollution - only heat and water.

When it comes to tyres, Honda cooperates with various manufacturers, although Bridgestone and Dunlop are quite popular. Honda Civic tyres, for example, are typically Bridgestone tyres - specifically, the RE88 GZ in size 195/60 R15 or the ER30 in size 205/55 R16. The Honda Accord used RE040 tyres in size 225/45 R17, while the Honda S2000 used 245/50 R17 RE050 products. The Honda Jazz tyre size, at least in the newer iterations, is 185/60 R15.
When it comes to Dunlop tyres the DX, EX, LX and hybrid Civic models used Dunlop SP20 tyres, with sizes ranging from 14 to 16 inches. The exact Honda Civic Tyre Size will vary based on various factors, so it’s best to use our guide for a perfect fit. The Honda CR-V, on the other hand, used Grandtrek ST20 tyres.

This list is not exclusive however, as Honda will still fit tyres from other brands as original equipment. The Honda FCX, for example, comes with Yokohama E105 tyres in 215/60 R16.
